Re: Media Centre Replacement?

I've been using MythTV for years, really need to do a big upgrade as it
is many versions behind now, but it has served me well and keeps working
(current uptime 767 days, 16 hours!). Have box in garage with 4 tuners
(2 individual PCI cards and 1 dual PCIe card) running directly out to
the dish on the front of the house, kids use their PC / tablet / phone
to connect to it, have a small format Atom with Nvidia chip on
motherboard doing HD(1080) to main TV in lounge and I used to run a
small media device (Huppage ?) in the bedroom, but the guy supporting it
seems to have stopped a few years back and it no longer works reliably
these days)

It supports the MCE remote, there are also remote control apps on
Android (guessing Apple as well).

Myth supports virtual tuners so you can record multiple stations on the
same MUX, I've had several full HD streams and a few SD streams running
concurrently with no issue on essentially what was an old desktop
motherboard (Dual Core Athlon II X2 235e with 2Gb RAM), guessing newer
hardware would do much more. My local BBC HD stations are all on the
same MUX allowing recording something on BBC1HD & BBC2HD using only 1
card (your channels may be different)

You can run it on Windows, but you ideally want it on a Linux build for
reliability, it runs client-server so you can have multiple back-ends
and multiple front-ends distributing functions as you see fit.

Downside is that it can be fiddly to setup if you have a non-standard
setup (although I guess that will have improved over the years since I
built mine and more DVB cards are supported by later versions of Linux
kernel), sometimes I've had a bit of fun and games with the scheduler,
but you can override it easily.

Upside, free! reliable, very rarely has it missed a recording and the
odd occasion where it has was due to last minute schedule change or due
to me mucking about with schedules and breaking something, it has a web
based scheduler interface as well, so really easy to schedule recordings
and tweak priorities, you can set priorities to recordings so your must
watch will get recorded when you want them and the other stuff can slip
and get recorded later on a rerun over night or a +1 service. There are
numerous addons and tweaks that people have done over the years, I guess
more or less everything you want to do has been done by someone before
and is written up on a blog somewhere.

There are a number of boot DVD's you can download to give it a try on
your current hardware.

I've not got a NetFlix or Amazon account, but it does appear that you
can integrate these (and others), guessing if it will not record though,
just playback from these.

Hope this helps

Alex
