Re: Audio round the house options?

Hi Tracey,

I also did as you did - lots of Cat5 plus speaker cable to ceilings. I used
to have central amps to ceiling speakers but haven't refitted them after
renovating. Original "controller" was xlobby with sound output
via multiple
sound cards to the amps but I also haven;t recommissioned this.
Instead, I have recently dipped my toe in the Sonos pond (a Play:5) and am
impressed.
You/we can still use the cable architecture with the "original"
Sonos
design of equipment, ie the Zone Players (<
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sonos-CONNECT-Wireless-Hi-Fi-formerly/dp/B001G7PLT6>)
but they've now been rebranded. These have the Sonos smarts, an integrated
amp (some of them) but no speakers - i.e. use your own. Other zone players
output line-level only to your own amp & speakers.

See the rack shot in this A-H article - at the bottom are centrally mounted
Zone Players (or "connect:amps").
http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/installation/smart-apartment-in-londons-mayfair.html

The "play" kit seems to be integrated amp & speakers Good for
portability
but perhaps not best if you want ceiling speakers.

Control is via a pc app, smartphone app, or dedicated hand-held controller,
but I suspect the dedicated controller is perhaps falling out of fashion
with the proliferation of smartphones & tablets, etc.

HTH,
Tim.
