One positive thing to add Paul is that the Smart Lights app is currently
the one and only app that does run locally on the ST hub. It only
controls devices of specific types locally and then only if they use the
standard device code. Some Z-Wave devices seem to fit this requirement
plus the included ZigBee devices - e.g. the power switch although I
suspect Hue doesn't. If you modify the device code at all then the
device is then considered not local to the hub and runs via the cloud.
My experience, like Phil's, is that latency is tolerably good - under a
couple of seconds. Not quite the instant C-Bus speed your used to but
typically better than IFTTT. If Phil is reporting 'instant' then just
maybe all his devices are being controlled locally. The web portal can
show you which devices and apps are local and which are cloud based.
Phil, if Hue control is running locally and you use the modified
driver then it will definitely put it in the cloud.
If you do go the ST route Paul then worth checking their direct web
sales site as they currently have offers on - it was £149 rather
than
£199 for the starter kit during Black Fri week although now I
think they
are back at £199 but with an included extra module worth around
£35-45 ish
