Data transfer between adjacent PCs

I have a new desktop machine and want to transfer data to it from my old
one.

New machine is Win 7 pro, old one is XP MCE (Home).
New machine has gigabit ethernet, old one has 100 mbit. Gigabit switch
inbetween.
Both have firewire ports
Both have usb, but the only storage devices I have are usb 2

Copying ~170GB of photos took *hours* last night at a reported ~9.5 MB/s
over ethernet. This seems to be about the max of 100 meg ethernet.
Googling seems to confirm that I'm around the max for the kit I've got.

Will it be appreciably faster to take the old drive out and put it in the
new machine? (both are SATA).
Anything else I can use to transfer more quickly than 100 meg ethernet? But
I don't want to but a new network card for the old machine...
I have a NAS with gigabit ethernet but it would seem slower to copy data to
it, and then onto the new machine.
Will utilities such as robocopy be noticably faster than Windows explorer?

Given it's a once-off event, should I just get on with it? ;-)

TIA,
Tim.
