Its not only the speed but also the latency that determines and something
c=
alled window size that will determine your max throughput.

=20

Essentially TCP/IP will only send a certain amount of data (window size)
be=
fore it will wait for the acknowledgement from the far end. Whilst almost
n=
egligble on the LAN .. on a WAN the latency quickly starts to become a
fact=
or. With a single connection (i.e. single FTP transfer) between 2
broadban=
d links that may well be a limiting factor.

=20

Its possible to calculate if you know the various OS (to assume default
TCP=
window size) what latency will equal what throughput.

=20

e.g.

https://www.switch.ch/network/tools/tcp_throughput/

=20

80ms might equate to only about 1.1 Mbits/sec =3D 175 Kbytes/sec (Windows
f=
ile transfer often reports in =E2=80=9CBytes/Sec=E2=80=9D not
=E2=80=9Cbits=
/sec)

=20

One end being on a proper low latency fat pipe (i.e. a Data Centre) and
mul=
tiple parallel transfers will negate the effect in most cases.

Subject: [ukha_d] Remote NAS via FTP

=20

=20=20

HI, I'm getting a bit frustrated trying to do what appears a relatively
si=
mple operation - ie site a NAS at a mate's house and use it as an offsite
b=
ackup using FTP and filesync. I have hit a number of bumps in the road -
o=
ne is the date and time returned by the FTP server on the synology NAS
(and=
Drobo) differs from that in the filelist - so every remote file has to be =
recopied to catch up on the correct date - this wouldn't be such an issue
i=
f the speed was decent but I'm only getting a few hundred K upload even
tho=
ugh my upload speed is >5Megs and the download speed at the remote site
is =
40Megs - anyone got any ideas as to why it would be so slow?

=20

I am getting a bit fed up and am planning a potential PLAN B - get an old
f=
ire safe, drill a hole in it for power and ethernet site it in my shed and
=
run cat5 to it. Should cover almost all eventualtites.

Cheers

=20

Tim.
