RE: Fibre broadband install
Gary,
The connection between the master socket and the modem is analogue (VDSL).
You can use CAT5 but all you are really doing is extending the telephone
line (once it has been filtered) to the modem so you are effectively
extending the A/B wires (straight not crossed). As Keith mentioned, I
assume this will use an RJ11 connection at the modem.
The connection becomes digital (Ethernet) after the modem. It is the Modem
that Modulates the Digital and DEModulates the Analogue signals.

PS Don't get me started on what a poor choice for future broadband
delivery VDSL is.... It should be Fibre all the way (FTTP, not FTTC)

First I want to thank you guys as when I had my monthly browse through the
ukha e-mails last week this thread made me check when we were getting
FTTC, amazingly we've just gone online with it.
I've arranged for it to be installed next month but want to make a few
changes in Node 0 so had a couple of questions.
Is the connection between the master socket and the open reach modem a
normal cat 5 cable and is it straight or crossed?
Thanks in advance
Gary

One thing I'd add to what has already been said about FTTC: you need
ideally to plug the fibre modem directly into your master socket, so if
you are currently using ADSL off an extension that might require changes
(either to where you place your modem/router, or for a data extension kit
to be installed).
If you are sticking with Sky, I understand they now offer self-install so
instead of having an engineer visit and change your master socket
faceplate, you simply get microfilters to install yourself just as with
ADSL. They also have a router that includes a VDSL modem so you don't need
a separate Openreach modem.
