Hi Colin,

A powerflash X10 module might help here, e.g.:
https://www.letsautomate.com/10258.cfm?

It sends X10 signals when contacts attached to it are opened/closed. So
couple this with a reed switch and magnet set on the gate, and a mains
alarm and X10 module in the house, and you should be away :-)

There are probably lots of other purely wireless solutions, including a
wireless burglar alarm/shed alarm? which would also achieve the same sort
of thing.
