RE: Kitchen radio options - Sonos?

Sonos has access to internet radio including all of the BBC national and
most local stations too, so no need to use the Sky/Aux input method. There
is a promotion running until Christmas for a free Bridge with any Play
unit,
so this means you have the option of running the Play:5 wirelessly over the
Sonos mesh network (the Bridge would be wired to your Ethernet network in
this case). Sonos requires that at least one unit is wired to your network,
and after that you can use the rest of the system over the Sonos mesh, or
you can also wire the Sonos players to the network where convenient which
places less reliance on 2.4GHz wireless should this be prone to
interference
or lots of competing wifi networks at your location.

The Play units can go loud without distortion, and the Play:3 has the
option
of being orientated in portrait or landscape modes. It does not go quite as
loud or as deep as a Play:5, and should you decide to use a pair for true
stereo output (you can link the speakers wirelessly from the settings menu)
they just look like conventional bookshelf hifi speakers. The only thing
"missing" with the Play:3 is there is no Aux In port, so if you
do want the
option of plugging in another local audio source then you'll need to stick
to the Play:5.

The new Play:1 also launch at the end of this month although stock might be
a bit limited initially. These are smaller/cheaper than the Play:3, and
again would be best deployed as a stereo pair.

The only "problem" with Sonos is that once you buy into the
system you soon
find you need/want to add zones in many more areas, so it's not a cheap
hobby!

Subject: [ukha_d] Kitchen radio options - Sonos?

My GLW has asked for a new kitchen radio for Christmas as the cheapo
supermarket-bought CD/Radio/ipod dock can't get Radio 4 over the bit of wet
string purporting to be an aerial.

First thought was Sonos, and the Play 5 has an aux input so could feed it
with a spare sky box tuned to R4 (audio over a Cat5 cable). But, we might
want to put the unit where it won't mask the cat5 wall outlet, so does R4
work over the internet to Sonos? (could then use the Play5 wirelessly).

Do I have an option to plug the sky box in to a "widget"
somewhere else that
the Play5 can then access?

And what's the network bridge for?

If I don't have to use the aux in on the Play5, I could get a Play3
instead... Any views on Play3 vs Play5? Our kitchen is approx 6m by 6m.

Happy to hear the thoughts of Sonos users :-)

Thanks,

Tim.
