Interesting. There may be something in this - wasting energy through
over-shooting the desired temperature - though in theory TRVs should stop
rooms overheating... though I do wonder how many of them are set at MAX
because people think it makes the room heat up more quickly. I'm sure the
very common, single thermostat in the hall doesn't help either - it's very
crude.


For HA'ers out there looking into this there's a standard called OpenTherm
for linking boilers to controls. Sadly despite its name it's not very open,
though versions of the spec are floating around on the internet. There have
been one or two projects to hook into OpenTherm systems too (e.g. http://www.tclcode.com/opentherm/index.html).
Depending on house size and occupancy, IMO a carefully controlled zoned
system has plenty of potential to reduce energy consumption.
