Thanks Stephen,

It seems its defo my hardware :-(
Tried handbrake on an i3 with 4GB ram and Win7 last night and it completed
in just over an hour, so was converting at about real time.
I couldn't get VLC to work on that machine as it grumbled about missing
codecs. I even tried the same revision (but 64bit version) as I was using
earlier but it still wouldn't encode :-( It does seem to be very picky.
Next option to try will be encoding with Plex as per Mark's A-H article,
and spec'ing up an i7 desktop replacement...
