If its new (it must be!) why not just take it back to Apple and
complain? Theres clearly something wrong with it!

Thnaks for the input. FWIW I am charging using the supplied Ipad
adapter. I might take it to a Mac shop and try a new charger. SWMBO
has an iPhone, but I imagine that will be a bit light on power - I
suppose I could get a charger from Ebay for travel use and see if that
is any better.
