Internet of Things

Noticed that the first funds from gov.uk have been awarded to
companies to =
develop strategies for an integrated "internet of things":

>>The Technology Strategy Board is investing =A3500,000 in
preparatory stud=
ies to develop strategies for moving towards a converged and open
applicati=
on and services marketplace in the Internet of Things. Following the
prepar=
atory studies, we will invest up to =A34m in a competition for a
demonstrat=
or in 2012.

What is this community's view of how things should evolve? (not that any
on=
e is offering =A350k!)

Is the debate now only one between 6lowpan, Zwave and Zigbee?

The XAP/XPL communities developed a protocol to allow interconnection of
lo=
w bit rate type devices. What are the lessons to impart to the Technology
=
strategy board from that? What type of features should the IoT support?
H=
ow do low bit rate networks share with high rate, low latency traffic? Do
w=
e end up with a common network that ticks the IoT box but a big management
=
nightmare (incl for security) that renders the concept useless in practice?

In the transition to an Internet of Things it seems to be that gateways
wil=
l become important to integrate existing networks that do not natively
supp=
ort the full range of IoT features. Any thoughts on how this will turn
out=
?

Thanks
JonS
