Simon =E2=80=93 definitely useful stuff.

I already have SBS running on my main server (Win7 also running Homeseer +

Servio DLNA Server to stream movies to Sony TVs + SMB shares etc) so that=

Now I=E2=80=99m working out whats possible (had no idea Android was an
opti=
on!) I think I have 2 requirements.

Lounge =E2=80=93 Pure Squeezeplayer frontend to feed audio to Hi-Fi. Not
ov=
erly fussed about quality =E2=80=93 mostly for internet radio, podcasts
and=
party/background music. Only concern here is remote control from Pronto. I=
do have an IR receiver on the server though I=E2=80=99ve never used it for=
anything in anger as it was bought many years ago for testing that never r=
esulted in anything permanent.

Garage =E2=80=93 here its slightly more general purpose though still 85%
in=
ternet radio/podcasts/music whilst I=E2=80=99m pottering on the classic
car=
. A browser/email app would be useful, but not essential. Android sounds
li=
ke a winner here. I already have an old stereo with line-in so again on
boa=
rd speakers wouldn=E2=80=99t be a factor. I=E2=80=99ve already bought the
a=
ndroid player for my Android tablet which is now buggered. (cracked
screen)=
Hopefully I can resurrect that account for at least 1 android device.

All 3 options have pros and cons - it depends a lot on how you're going to

use the Joggler and if you think you might want to use it for other things

later.

* If you think you are going to boot it up before using and then shutdown

inux is fine. A full Linux like Ubuntu is most likely to wear out your
memo=
ry stick (despite tuning to try to reduce writes).=20

* If you want it on 24/7 for weeks at a time you'll probably find the
stock=
OS or Android is more reliable - with Ubuntu I had to reboot every week or=
so; PnP on its own was fine but with Opera Mobile I found I had to reboot =
every few days. I couldn't get Squeeze Player to work on PnP for some
reaso=
n.

* If you use Google apps (GMail, Calendar etc) then Android works really
we=
ll.
* Andoid has the best touch interface, especially for large fingers. The
Fl=
orence keyboard on the Ubuntu build isn't bad, but the integration is
still=
not as good as Android (which pops up the keyboard whenever you need it).
* If you just want to emulate a SB Touch there's a Ubuntu build which has
S=
queezeplayer and xmbc on the desktop and works really nicely (I can't
remem=
ber exactly whose build it was).
* If you're likely to want other apps, especially open source ones, then
Li=
nux is probably your best choice.
* If you go the Android route you'll have to buy the SB controller and
play=
er apps but they're as cheap as chips really.

For about 9 months I was running Stephen Ford's Ubuntu plus owfs, SBS 7.5,
=
lighttpd on my Joggler (connected to a powered USB hub with the memory
stic=
k, 2.5" USB disk and iButton LinkUSB). For whatever reason it was
never rea=
lly reliable enough which was a bit of a problem as I use 1-wire to
control=
my heating. At the insistence of senior management I moved the owfs, light=
tpd & SBS off to a Buffalo LinkStation (which is working really well)
and, =
as of a couple of months, use Android to mainly run a browser on the
Joggle=
r. It's in the kitchen though and is also convenient for checking
email/cal=
endar. If I can get SB working I think that'll be my final configuration
(t=
hough will have to work out what to do about speakers as the built-in ones
=
are too small even for speech radio).

The Android installation on Joggler has progressed very well in 2011. I

I am.

I'm using it under the standard Joggler OS with a server running on a
separate linux box.

All I can say is it is absolutely brilliant. Best 50 quid I ever spent. It
effectively becomes a Squeezebox Touch, but with a bigger screen. The only
downside is that you can't play WMA streams on it, Which is slightly
annoying for me as Planet Rock only broadcast higher bit rates in WMA. You
can apparently get the server to transcode, but I have not cracked it yet.
Iplayer plugin on it is very good.

As for remotes, I don't use one normally, as it is in front of me on my
desk and the touch screen interface is very good. But I have installed the
Logitech one on my Android phone and it works fine.

If you want digital output, you can modify a 10 quid usb sound card to
provide SPDIF or use an external USB DAC. Though I have not got that far
yet.

To install it, you'll need to get an SSH server running on the joggler,

There is also a working squeeze player on android install too, which I may
try at some point.
