Cheapest and easiest would be a small nightlight such as used for
childrens rooms. Very dim by design.
LED light in a box as a table lamp might do the trick.
If you have a box that is open on the bottom, raised slightly off the table
so there is only a small aperture for light to escape through and direct
the light into the box so what you see if diffused and reflected?
Or have it so the light exits through a tube, this will give very
directional light that you could have 'beam' across in front of the sofa
and it will only illuminate something put in it's path. May also highlight
any dust though.
Either way red should be less obvious
Stick a couple of the ikea led strips under the sofa for full lowrider
style too.
