Inspiration required - 'cinema' lighting

I'm after some inspiration for some lighting so you can "see what
you're
doing" in a very dark room. There are many ceiling downlights, but
even
dimming these takes a fair bit of energy, and I'm looking for something
that can illuminate the seating area just enough to see the buttons on a
remote control

Much like the way a BMW has a red light illuminating the centre console
just enough to see what's what.

I'd prefer not to break into the insulated ceiling - a dimmable wall light
may be an option, but I'd prefer something more directional and a
downlight - for example a very weak kitchen cabinet surface mount light ?

Thanks !
