DVD Ripping - suggestions

I might try housing my DVDs on my Drobo - what do people use to rip
the DVDs - I dont see that they need to be rips of the entire disk - from
what I can see a 1-1.5GB rip retains enough of the original quality to be
OK to watch and is more useful for watching on other devices.  Is there a
"best in class" ripper.

Anyone got any comments?
