Dam! That explains why I've wasted the last three weeks of my life
unsuccessfully trying to get surround sound out of the REVO (running
XBMCLIve) to the TV (via HDMI) and then onto the Amp via optical from the
Samsung TV.

OK... so what low power devices (preferably ION2 based) DO support
multichannel over HDMI ?

One problem with the Acer Revo is that the HDMI output is 2 channel only
(due to a hardware restiction i believe) and with Win7 you can only output
audio to one output, so you can't do HDMI and optical at the same time.
ATV2 allow full digital audio to both the HDMI and optical.
