Funny you should mention this - I am also looking at a similar
solution.

I download a lot of TV shows from from UK or US. Got about 1.2 Tb. The
format is usually avi.

I use AirVideo to transcode on the fly and watch on the iPad BUT watching
on the plasma in the Lounge is a different matter. Got an old hacked
AppleTV but got fed-up with updates breaking it.

Now looking a transcoding all of my files to native iTunes and then using
AppleTV2 and iTunes.
