RE: Water softeners
I have a Kinetico softener too which has been really good.
Adding an HA relevance to this topic - I've found it a pain to remember to
add new salt blocks every few weeks. You can tell when it's run out as the
water feels so different in the shower etc. I was thinking of adding a salt
level sensor and feeding that into my HA system (probably directly into
HomeVision). Was thinking of an optical sensor across the salt block area.
Anyone done this with one of these types of softener?
Paul.

I have used this softener twice (moved house) and its been fine.

It does need an electricity supply, but comparing with people I know who
have kinetic softeners that do not use electricity, I find my overall salt
cost is a lot less. I am able to buy 75kg of salt locally for 22 gbp, and
it lasts me for over 6 months, on a 4 bed house. The kinetic block salt is
much more expensive I found.
There are two types of head unit, one that measures your usage and one that
just operates on a time basis, i.e. it would regenerate every 3 days.
Both times I've got the usage based model, slightly more expensive, but
then it only makes the softener regenerate when it needs to.
Whatever softener you get, just watch your input water pressure. Upper
limit for most softeners is about 5psi, if your water pressure is higher
than this then most likely you will need a pressure regulating valve.
