Radio frequencies conduct through direct 'shorts' and almost any
object
at short distances due to capacitive loading , resonance and
de-sensing.  This alters the optimum frequency notch and directivity of
the antenna too.   You'll notice this when you move your hand close to
an FM radio aerial, my bedside one is really picky as it loses signal as
your hand approaches which makes tuning really difficult..  So you need
a reasonable gap to avoid such issues - a lacquer or sticky tape isn't
going to work and the more mm of plastic the better - hence the bumpers
or even better an in case antenna ;-)
