Photo-management software

I've tried and tried, but I'm just not getting along with Picasa. I
really wanted it to work, and I bought some online storage with them (part
of a deal when I got a Eye-fi card), but I find the local/web sycronisation
very clunky, and the way albums and folders are managed is just plain
confusing.

So, short of buying a Mac to use iLife/iPhoto, are there any other good
solutions out there? I need to be able to access the photos from an
iPad/iPhone, so there would need to be an app that goes with it. Would
need a local app (for speed), and a web-based companion (for access).
Basic photo editing would be useful too (cropping, recoloring), and that's
about it.

Any recommendations?

Thanks, Pete
