1/2" or 15mm

Is there an easy way to tell 1/2" copper pipe from 15mm where the
pipes are painted and connected to radiator valves?

I want to install some TRVs and don't want a repeat of the problems I had
when replacing a toilet float valve. I decided to add a service cock and
found that the compression fitting wouldn't stop weeping. I soldered a
section of 15mm in to allow the compression fitting to be water tight, but
I don't want to do that on several rads.

Pete
