And not necessarily that easy, - or sometimes even possible for
certain
devices... especially when a specific Homeseer plugin has been purchased
and
configured just right for a serial device for which a simple conversion to
TCPIP just isn't available...

RS232 isn't going to go away completely for HA any time soon.... :-(

Yes, I had been thinking about moving to RS232 over Ethernet - seems a much
more attractive solution - shame it all adds up to a lot of cash though for
a number of devices.

details about it just now... I do remember I got it from eBay though....

The other thing I've noticed is that on my HA server (now a VM), the
virtual
serial port drivers do occasionally "die" and the machine
completely loses
contact with all its virtual serial ports... I don't recall that being the
case immediately after installation on a "clean" XP build, - I
definitely
think it started happening some time after I'd been using it without
problems for a while, so the likelihood is that some Windows update or
other
introduced an instability... I've got round it by scheduling an automated
reboot of the VM every night at 04:00 which seems to keep it running pretty
sweet. Very occasionally, (and it really is quite rare nowadays), the
drivers will still die during the day, and only a reboot will fix it, but
that only seems to happen once in a blue moon....

As a matter of policy I'm therefore trying to get as much as possible of
the
RS232 kit attached to the HA Server transferred over to a TCPIP connection
wherever possible, so I've bought Comfort UCM_ETH daughterboards for the 2
UCMs currently connected via RS232, and as mentioned, I'll be seeking a
replacement for the Quasar temperature boards as well...

Interested in your Ethernet-RS232 server box - what did you get?

I'm running all my servers on VMWare vCenter and thinking of moving my HA
Server over too - but the 12 serial ports are currently a sticking point.

Can you tell me a little more about this item? - it's just reminded me that
I do need to do something about my temperature sensing solution... - I
previously used a couple of Quasar boards to support up to 8 DS1820s, but
they rely on RS232 port power... - when I virtualised my HA server I
implemented an Ethernet-RS232 server box to provide up to 8 serial ports
via
the LAN... but the serial ports presented by that box don't have (or don't
have enough) power to run the Quasar boards, so I haven't had any
temperature sensing going on since I virtualised... I've been meaning to do
something about that for a fair while...

So, I already have a bunch of the 1-wire temp sensors kicking around... I'd
like to get them back into use... I need a solution that I can implement
pretty much out of the box... - if I haven't had time to even think about
this for nigh on a year, you can be sure I don't have time to be soldering
up my own boards and/or rolling my own code!

I want the solution to integrate with Homeseer...

I *need* the solution to NOT be dependent on serial ports to provide power!

I suppose one thing I could try to think about would be to modify the
Quasar
boards to run on power from a separate wall-wart, - but see my earlier
comment about soldering!

Anyone got any thoughts / suggestions?
