Regards batteries, go for low self discharge NiMHs. I use Hybrios but
Eneloops are also good.

They cost a lot more up front, and have a lower stated capacity, but they
hold their charge when not
being used, so are good for torches, GPS, and even remote controls. I have
slowly built up good
stocks of AA and AAA (and even PP3) Hybrios and they work *very* well. We
now don't buy disposable
batteries.
