How about a different approach? - Using CCTV with "object
recognition"
technology... -- the Geovision software that I use for instance can be
configured to recognize and monitor an object within the field of view,
and to trigger an alarm when it is moved or removed from the image...

The sort of stress gauge used in digital scales would work. Might be a
bit susceptible to false alarms without some fancy processing though...
