IIRC the biggest "gotcha" is the very limited number of NICs
that are
supported "out of the box"... I am currently running an ESXi
server on a
Gigabyte mobo with a core 2 duo & 8GB RAM. It was happy with all the
onboard storage controllers and happily utilized a pair of 400GB SATA
disks connected directly to the mobo. It was NOT happy however with the
onboard Realtek network adapter and I had to drop in an Intel PRO-1000
PCI card instead. When I was doing this, I noticed that the list of
supported NICs was *VERY* small - literally just 2 or 3 cards were
mentioned... - lucky I just happened to have one of them in my spares
bin!
