I don't know about the Freesat boxes, but you can use the magic-eye
stuff "standalone"...

This is exactly what I use with my current sky box, but since its RF2
output doesn't work properly (no phantom power I think) I have
retained the separate power supply and have taped an IR emitter over
the front of the sky box. Works great :-)
Apparently spare IR emitters are available too - I just need to order a
few.
