This is very interesting as I am planning the network in node zero. I
am currently using
some old 10/100 noisy switches.

I would like to move to Gb and the NetGear GS116 looks good apart from the
fact it is not
rackmount.

I have found the JGS516 but this is not fanless.

Any recommendations?

In the subject of Cat5e cabling. In the last house I installed 12 Cat5e
points using Cat5e
sockets and cable. I had never done it before and it ran Gb fine.
