There is a newer cradle for the 89x/88x remotes to fix this issue, if you
call harmony support on the 0800 number, explain the issue, they will send
you a new cradle FOC. The new design has smaller gold plated contacts that
are not as 'fussy' as the original for the remote placement to charge.

BTW - I don't think a harmony is suitable for the original question though.
What about a ipod touch/iphone?
