Another 'free' alternative is imagex that is supplied with Microsoft
WAIK:

Install WAIK, create a bootable WIN PE CD/DVD/USB key, then when you boot,
you can run imagex to create an image of any disk to a file on the same
disk
(assuming it has space), to another disk (eg USB) or a network share, etc.
It was designed for Vista/2008, but works quite happily with XP/2003
