Hi Rob,
iPhone (and just about any other apple product) requires the music tracks
to be in their own format. Now you should not have to re-rip any of the CDs
you can instead tell iTunes where to find the music collection; it scans
folders to add them to a library much like WMP, but with 100's of CDs could
take a while; then you can click a little checkbox next to the music file
for 'an add to device' (best make sure that the iPhone is connected first
so it knows where to put the music).
When your done just force a sync with the device and it should autoconvert
the tracks into what ever format is required and copy them to the device,
again this will probably take a while depending on how many tracks you are
doing. If you just have a play around with iTunes it should be fairly
obvious, I would give you more detailed instructions but every few updates
and apple seem to move/change something so some of what said may not be
correct for the current version.
