The idea of those was simple: if the lights in a room are NOT
currently on and the door into the room is opened then the lights
should be turned on automatically (think house entry door for example
at night).

Also, yes, in my house all the doors are auto-closing due to building
regs (3 storey townhouse with staircase as main/only way out).

Yupe, that's the idea - turn on lights upon opening door into room, if
a room has lights on and there's been no motion in the room for a
reasonable period (e.g. 10-15 mins) then turn off the lights.

I'm not looking to do this for every room, just a couple of places,
like main entry door, in lounge for entry and occupancy, in kitchen
likewise.

Also maybe detect door opening in bedroom so that "alarm clock"
will
only give up once its sure you've actually got up and either gone into
en-suite or left the bedroom :-)

As you mentioned though, for the door sensors to be useful there is
the matter of long time it would take to detect a door being opened so
as to turn on the light in a reasonable time.

I'm looking for some solution that's relatively easy to implement and
not too costly, hence why I thought of cheap magnetic door sensors
wired into existing 1-wire and maybe wireless PIRs then back into
1-wire as well.

So no-ones on the list has anything like this in use in their house
already?
