Thanks for the replies.  I have installed Office Ok with the right
key, found by calling one of the people my parents have used to help
them in the past, I think he originally installed it when he set-up
their then new PC.

No idea what file is missing, it doesn't say.  The fact that it is
missing a file when installing from CD or download for two different
devices makes me wonder if something is fundamentally wrong.  My plan
to copy files off the machine using a USB memory stick is also down
the pan as the machine is not recognising it when it is plugged in,
which ever USB socket I use, even though the light on the device
lights OK.
I also tried a system restore, but that hasn't helped either :-(
Tomorrow I'll take a trip to PC world to buy some CDs to see if I can
copy data that way.
