Re: Re: LinuxMCE 710 - An Overview

I might be a tiny bit biased.

Two things: First, using the CDs the installation of LinuxMCE takes
AGES. The DVD is the preferred way of doing the installation. Two
reasons:
1) It is WAY faster (I install a new core in about 30 minutes, from
boot, to AV Wizard)
2) It contains support for both i386 and amd64 Media directors. It
you use the i386 CDs and want to create a Media Director, which is
amd64 capable, it does not work plug and play.

Yes, the DVD will use the full drive, but find a small 80-100GB drive
and put LinuxMCE on that drive for kicks.

Having said all that, let me come back to your initial question,
regarding Misterhouse vs. LinuxMCE.

I have played with both. Misterhouse is great, if you know Perl, you
have fairly low powered machines and don't want a dedicated setup.
LinuxMCE is great, if you have more powerful machines, and want a
single solution for EVERY aspect of home automation incl. media. To
get the full benefit of LinuxMCE it HAS to be the centre of your
network. Other things work, but are nothing I would suggest.
LinuxMCE's core needs to have TWO network cards. One for the internal
network, and one for the external network. It has a fairly good
firewall script which also does QoS for VoIP.

Unfortunately, we recently switched hosting providers, so the
linuxmce.org domain is currently unavailable. But do yourself a
favor, and read the installation tips and information available on
the wiki. It will help you a lot, and safe countless hours of trying
things in ways, LinuxMCE was not intended to work.

Again, LinuxMCE is a WHOLE solution. Accept it, and you will get the
best available system. :)
