Where you both using the same connection type? i.e. 3G, GPRS, Edge etc

I have been pretty uncomplimentary about Blackberries on a few
occasions but I had cause to be seeking some information whilst a
colleague from the US was doing the same - I was using Orange GPRS on a
N95 and to say his outperformed mine was an understatement - mine was
woeful in comparison - I called Orange to see if my connection speed
could be upped, but they said no (TBH I don't have any confidence in
the person I was speaking to) - Am I missing something? Do I need to
get a Blackberry to get reasonable connection speeds, or is something
available on my phone that will compete?
