Alternatives to recordable DVD media?

I hope this is on topic!
I've got a Toshiba HDD recorder, DVD player and writer.
I've had it a year or two and now I've more or less filled the HDD
so time to copy some of the programmes I want to keep to DVD.
So I bought the recommended DVD-RAM for it and tried to copy
programmes.
Initially I copied and played back 2 programmes fine. But then
subsequent recordings wouldn't play properly.
It's double sided cartridge DVD-Ram so I tried the other side.
Couldn't record anything on side B.
Took the DVD-RAM back to the shop and got another one. Can't record
anything at all on this one.
Don't know if the problem lies with my writer or the media. But I
never had much success when I tried to use DVD-RW in different PCs.

So my questions are...
What are other peoples experiences with writing to DVD media
(successful or otherwise)?
And are the alternatives to recordable DVD?
I see some PVRs have an SD slot. Is this the future?

Andy
