Just got back home after the holidays and am catching up on email.

I did look at prices for deep-discharge type batteries, and was a bit
suprised at how much they cost compared to car batteries.  I think my first
experiment will be with one of my working UPSs (internal batteries) and see
how long it runs without AC power with only the water heater controller as
a load.  ;-)
