I made the mistake of believing the service advice that the reversal
was the
preferred method ... my filter used to block up the other way round as
well,
may be not quite as quickly - but it was easier to vacuum, so it got
vacuumed more regularly.

I've found out that the new power supplies have a plastic guard to change
the airflow and improve cooling of the power supply so I guess recent
NV/NV+
models are less likely to suffer this failure. Pity they don't offer the
guards as a retrofit.
