RE: Linksys NSLU2

I have an NSLU2..

1) Yes, it uses samba so Windows PC's will simply see it as
machine/drive/directory, just like any other shared disk on the network.
You can map drives to specific directories etc and give different users
on the NSLU2 different access rights, so that one person can only read
while another can read and write etc.

2) The NSLU2 is basically a small low powered embedded Linus
machine and does not use FAT32 natively, it uses the Linux EXT3 format.
You can get EXT3 drivers for windows so you could still read it on a
windows PC but would have to install extra drivers (these don't come
with the NSLU2, you'd have to google fo them). If you reflash the NSLU2
with one of the "hacked" firmwares (OpenSLug etc) then I believe
youCAN
use NTSF and FAT32 BUT you still need an EXT3 partion somewhere either
on the disc or on a PenDrive etc.

As a NAS its OK.. not really that fast (it certainly won't max out your
100mbps network) but its plenty fast enough to stream a couple of movies
to the XBOX, and MP3's to the jukebox. Whats great about the NSLU2 is
the ability to install hacked firmware and even a full Debian install,
meaning you can use it for other stuff.. e.g. there is a BitTorrent
client for it etc

As a NAS its OK.. not great, but OK, as an interesting little low
powered linux pc" its far more interesting.

Subject: [ukha_d] Linksys NSLU2

I am looking for a simple NAS solution and was thinking of the Linksys
NSLU2
but I am not really familiar with this technology does anyone know if;

1. It appears as an additional shared drive in explorer
2. Whether it is possible to use standard FAT32 formatted USB Hard
drives,
which can also be read on a PC?

Many thanks

Steve
