I went down the mini-mac route (thanks to Phil's advise) mainly as it
was the only OS that correctly put the firewire drives to sleep and
woke them up successfully. I tried all versions of Windows and they all
failed in someway or another.

The mini-mac just works brilliantly. And the wake up time is minimal on
the drives (i don't use raid)

One thing i did find was that when playing back ripped dvd's at times
it started to stutter. Tried all sorts of things until i finally
twigged it was the mini-mac screensaver causing the problem. DOH! Been
fine ever since
