In the old days perhaps - all modern hard drives use either an
offloading "ramp" (hitachi/ibm disks) or use the rotational
energy in
the spining disk platter to safely move the heads to the landing
zones.
I mean seriously, think about it - you can walk up to a proliant
server, pop the lever and yank a drive spinning at 15K out of a bay
wiht no ill effects... a desktop class drive spinning at 7200rpm is
positively pedestrian in comparison.
