RE: Quad processor / server - recommendation ?
For VMware there is sadly no way to pass PCI cards through to the VM.
For my PVR and geovision I have had to use a physical host. One way
around this might be a USB tuner which you could pass to the VM. I
haven't tested this to see how well it would work.
You can get VMWare server for Windows and Linux here

It is possible to get it working on XP with a guide like this

Just tried to download the evaluation copy and first obstacle ... it
would appear it only runs on Windows 2003.

Yes, that's what I read as well.. sounds interesting. I'll have to get
a demo and try it.
I just wonder how resilient this is.. with VMWare if the VM crashes the
PC stays up, but with this I just wonder if something goes wrong does
the whole host PC crash ?

Xen's "PCI passthrough" feature allows you to allocate a PCI card
to a
guest VM...
