How big does the drive need to be?

You can get a 4GB Samsung SSD for about 70 quid, and the 8GB one for less
than a ton - it's a straight replacement for a 2.5" drive

Other thing to keep in mind is some CF cards don't behave properly when
used
as IDE drive replacements - never had it happen myself but I've read
reports
of it.
