If it were me, I would have just recovered everything
emphasizing that you haven't looked at the files so it
may be possible that some could be corrupted, etc.

It will then become a family matter as to what happens.

I had to recover a disk for the student son of a colleague.
I used Ontrack EasyRecovery which worked quite well. I managed
to recover most of his final years coursework. I just copied the
whole lot to DVDs and purposefully didn't check the content.
I decided I didn't want to know about anything likely to
cause embarrassment, to either party.
