Hate to say it, but isn't this the ideal application for a wireless
network?

Most of the usual wireless problems can be avoided if you use APs with
multiple LAN ports, connected as WDS relays, and use wired connections
to the AP for the machines themselves. External antennae might be a good
idea as well...

(The new Apple Airport Extreme base station has 3 LAN ports and 1 WAN
port, supports WDS, and is supplied with a windows version of the config
tool.)
