I think Paul understands this too however his point is that he bought a
package of software and hardware and the authors are now after a period
deciding to impose a regular charge for using that software.
A bit like someone selling you an OS and then after a couple of years
saying
"you need to subscribe to keep continued use of your product" -
not charging
for updates but charging for a product that you have bought to continue
working otherwise they'll stop the product working.
