Homevision - serial to USB

I am not sure if this has come up before, but does anyone know if you can
run a Homevision (serial interface) unit through a standard RS232 / USB
converter?

I have tried, but without success. I am sure the converter works, as I have
used it with other things OK.

I am wondering if it is just a simply configuration setting that I have not
yet tried.
