I've had no end of trouble with Whirlpool American style fridges -=20
the first made constant clicking sounds like you describe, and it=20
took almost a year to get a replacement out of Whirlpool even though=20
their engineers couldn't fix it and it was only 3 months old when it=20
went wrong (they even tried to get out of it at the end by saying it=20
was now more than a year old and out of warrenty!)

The solonoid valve for the water dispenser in the replacement failed=20
after only 18 months, and both fridges can occasionally go mental=20
with the front panel and all the lights inside flashing on and off=20
(accompanied by relay clicking too). It has to be unplugged=20
to "reboot".

Whirlpool are on my blacklist now. Crap quality and crap service are=20
not a winning combination.
