OK so it seems a ReadyNAS or Terastation with USB drives for backup.
Having had a read the new Terastation II Pro seems a really good bet.

A 1gb with a Raid 5 config will do fine and then 5 750gb USB drives for
daily full back up. But having looked at the price I think 500gb USB
drives would be fine as this is going to be enough for a good while and
if he gets over 500gb my guess is the price will have dropped further by
then!
What sort of timescale would say 500gb take to backup over usb2, would
overnight be enough time?
