There a app you can download from Microsoft that allows you to display
the exact version on the desktop. It's one of these XP extra functionality
type things....

It's a while since I did it but I think it was TweakUI: <http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx>

Hoping to draw on the collective knowledge here.....

If I remember correctly there is a file in Windows XP that contains the
exact version of XP installed - i.e. home/pro/SP2 etc - anyone know where
that is? I have faint recollections of setup.log, or eula something - I
have
spent an age googling, but cant find anything. I need it because a friends
laptop has given up, and I need to find the correct disk to do a repair,
now
booting from linux to read the filesystem (they only have the oem disk, no
repair option)
